When attaching an additional volume, why does a different device name appear in my VM logs? For example, why does /dev/sdX appear in my VM logs when I chose /dev/xvdY?

The device you chose when attaching an additional volume is actually a symbolic link towards the real name of the device. The name that appears in the logs is determined by the kernel or the driver used by the OS. This behavior allows for a greater compatibility between different Clouds.
